"I am deeply saddened at news of the passing of Italy's Ambassador to Australia, Francesca Tardioli - a greatly respected diplomat who will be dearly missed," she wrote on Twitter. "My thoughts are with her family, friends, colleagues at this difficult time." Australia's ambassador to Italy, Margaret Twomey, also paid tribute to Ms Tardioli on social media. "Heartbreaking news on the passing of Ambassador Francesca Tardioli. Dear friend. Brilliant colleague. Greatly respected diplomat," she wrote. The Italian Embassy also shared its condolences to an "exquisite person". "We mourn the premature death of Ambassador Francesca Tardioli. An exquisite person, professional model and promoter of human rights," it said. "We join in the pain of the family."
