Remember Col. David E. Severance - U.S. Marines Thread U.S. Marines @USMC · 7h Today, we pause to remember Col. David E. Severance, the company commander of the Marines who raised the flag on Iwo Jima and a Silver Star recipient. He passed away on 2 Aug, 2021 at the age of 102, having served in WWII, Korea, and Vietnam. Col. Severance is remembered for his heroism, and his humor. In a 2019 interview with @lajollalight, he was asked how he wished to be remembered. “I never thought about it,” he said. “Just that I was a Marine for 30 years, and I never ended up in jail.” The Marines who raised the flag on Mt. Suribachi stand proudly in the memory of our Corps as heroes who embodied dauntless courage and unwavering valor. From right to left in @AP’s famous image, they are: Cpl. Harlon H. Block, KIA on Iwo Jima, 1 March, 1945. Pfc. Harold P. Keller. Pfc. Franklin R. Sousley, KIA on Iwo Jima, 21 March, 1945. Sgt. Michael Strank, KIA on Iwo Jima, 21 March, 1945. Pfc. Ira H.
