It's not too late to plant seeds - Lettuce and radishes have a quick turn around. Potatoes, whether sweet potatoes from the grocery turned into slips or seed potatoes are some of the highest yielding crops and can be stored easily. Leafy greens such as kale and swiss chard are some of the most productive nutrient dense crops you can grow. Add a tomato plant or two and you'd be surprised how much food you can produce in whatever space you have available. Anyone with toddlers or babies, after raising 3 kids through infant stage and feeding store bought baby food to the first two and home grown and freshly made baby food to the youngest. I highly recommend growing your own blending it yourself, and freezing into good sized portions. We did this with avocados, sweet potatoes chicken, green beans, carrots and kale. Easier than you would think, saves you money and you're not feeding preservatives and whatever else they add to keep baby food shelf stable. Again its not too late... Chickens are also great additions and 2- 3 hens can be kept in a suburban backyard with little issue or noise and will supply you approximately 1 dozen eggs a week and will be the healthiest eggs you have ever eaten. Chicks will take 6-8 months to start laying so look for larger more mature birds for quicker production. Housing requirements for chickens are literally anything that will keep them dry in a storm. We have used old dog houses and kennels in the past. Many great content creators in the small home garden space if you need help getting started.
"Square foot gardening" and "raised beds" are great but we have been successful growing tomatoes and peppers in flowerbeds along side standard landscaping as well. We only use organic fertilizers and diatomaceous earth for pest control and mechanical and mulching methods for weed suppression.
